J.C.Pienaar Boerdery (Pty) Ltd t/a Big Egg Co

In the early 1950’s late Mr. Jannie Pienaar, still a teacher bought a few chickens for his wife to earn her some extra income from the farm that he farmed on part-time. He told her that he would resign as a teacher the day that her income was more than his teacher’s salary. She started by supplying fertilised eggs to a well known broiler farm in the vicinity and soon met the challenge that was given.

Late father Jannie started farming full time and produced table eggs on a big scale. He built the business to well over a hundred thousand layers and marketed under the name Hanekraai. He was well known, beloved and a respected businessman in Potchefstroom. He sadly passed away in a plane accident in 1983 that also took the life of his firstborn son, Attie Pienaar.

His wife Minnie, no stranger to farming carried on with the farm and joined hands with Highveld Egg Co-op to do the marketing. In 1991 the only other child and current owner finished his B Comm. degree from the NWU and military training, took over from her. He decided to become an independent egg producer and changed the sole proprietor to a private company, giving his mother recognition by naming the company after her initials, from there J.C.Pienaar Boerdery (Pty) Ltd.  
The current farm has over a hundred and fifty thousand layers in both conventional and semi automatic houses producing eggs under the watchful eye of consulting vet Dr. Scott Elliot. It has  a quality assessed packing station that grades, packages and distributes all the eggs produced in a radius of 250km from Potchefstroom. He is assisted by his wife Hanlie with a BA degree from the NWU and from the marriage were born two daughters and two sons.

J.C.Pienaar Boerdery (Pty) Ltd trades under the name Big Egg Co. and sells eggs in the following sizes and packaging:

• Medium eggs between 43gram and 51 gram.
• Large eggs between 51 gram and 59 gram.
• Extra Large eggs between 59 gram and 66 gram.
• Jumbo eggs above 66 gram per egg.

All the above can be ordered in pre packed packaging in the following sizes:

• 2 x 6 eggs called Pre Pack
• 1 x 18 eggs called Family Pack 18’s
• 1 x 30 eggs called Family Pack 30’s
• 1 x 48 eggs called Carry Pack 48’s
• 1 x 60 eggs called Carry Pack 60’s

All the above come in boxes of 15 or 30 dozen.
